Istanbul has two major airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) on the Asian side. The right transfer depends on your budget, luggage, arrival time and destination.

Istanbul Airport (IST) → City centre

  • Metro (M11): Connects IST to Kağıthane and Gayrettepe; change to the M2 line at Gayrettepe for Taksim, Şişli and Levent. Traffic-free and paid with an İstanbulkart.
  • Havaist buses: Direct services to many points such as Taksim, Sultanahmet, Kadıköy and Beşiktaş. Handy if you have lots of luggage.
  • Taxi: Use the official taxi ranks outside the terminal and make sure the meter is on. Journey times vary a lot with traffic.
  • Private / VIP transfer: Pre-booked meet & greet, fixed price and door-to-door service — the most comfortable choice for families, groups and business travel.

Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) → City centre

  • Metro (M4): Connects SAW to Pendik, Kartal, Maltepe and Kadıköy. For the European side, change to Marmaray at Ayrılık Çeşmesi.
  • Havabus buses: Services to central points such as Kadıköy and Taksim.
  • Taxi and private transfer: Allow for bridge/tunnel crossings and traffic to the European side; late at night a private transfer is usually more predictable.

Which option suits whom?

  • Solo, light luggage, daytime: The metro is fastest and cheapest.
  • Families / lots of luggage: Havaist/Havabus or a private transfer.
  • Business trip, late arrival: A pre-booked VIP transfer.
  • Layover: Leave your bags in storage and take the metro into town; allow at least 3 hours for the return.

Timetables, routes and fares can change; check the operator's official channels before you travel.
